Ancient Remains

Wupatki National Monument, Arizona

A stunning display of color and light fills the sky above Flagstaff highlighting an incredible morning at the Wupatki National Monument. I had previously scouted this composition during a photo workshop and wanted to capture it with snow on the San Fransisco peaks (highest point in Arizona at 12, 663 ft) in the winter. Wapatki National Monument is over 1500 feet lower in elevation than Flagstaff and doesn't get as much snow. This image was made about 48 hours after the largest snow storm in a decade hit Flagstaff. We monitored the weather reports and road conditions closely and as soon as it looked promising - we made the trip from Phoenix. Even though it was ten degrees outside, to capture the 1000 year old ruins in these kind of conditions can only be called be a blessing...
